A Guide to Avoid Failing Water Level Sensor

A water level sensor will help you assess the level of water in a tank or a well. It helps you to know when to initiate an action like switching the pump on and off. Thus you should ensure that the water level flow sensor does not fail at any point. Also, you should know how to detect a failing sensor so that you call an expert to fix the anomaly.

The first step to avoiding failing water level sensors is to ensure you select the right sensor for your use. This guide will help you through the selection, installation, and maintenance of water level sensors.

Choosing the Right Water Level Sensor

Several firms depend on storage tanks, reservoirs, or silos to store water or fluids. Since they are out of public sight, it’s possible to run out of water or any fluids. Thus, they need to keep monitoring the level of the fluid in the tanks. In many instances, it’s impractical and dangerous to keep opening the tanks to check the fluid level. Thus, a water level sensor helps them to know when to refill the reservoirs. Also, the sensor will alert you on when to close the fluid inlet. Below are the things you should consider when choosing a flow sensor.

Type of Sensor

There are many types of water level sensors. Some work with water-like fluids, while others will work with denser liquids. The sensors are in two major classes. The first and common one is the contact level indicator. Mostly, they float above the liquid or sink. Then, there are some contactless level sensors. They are useful in corrosive and hazardous fluids. Here are the types of liquid flow sensors you can use as fluid level sensors.

Float Sensor

A fluid float sensor is usually used in a water tank or reservoir. It rests above the water or another liquid and moves as the liquid moves. In most cases, it is attached to an alarm system or a shut-off/turn-on timer. When the liquid drops to a certain level, the sensor turns on the pump to fill the tank. When the water rises to the marked full tank level, it shuts off the pump. The processes are automatic and convenient. Also, they need minimal maintenance.

You can use the sensor in a variety of fluids. The viscosity and foam on the fluid surface don’t affect the efficiency of the sensor.

Hydrostatic Level Sensor

This is a submissible type of water level sensor. It rests at the base of the reservoir. It detects the level of the fluid by the pressure that rests upon it. The pressure at the base of a tank increases with the increase of fluid level.

You will gauge the level of the fluid based on its density and pressure within the tank. It would help if you emptied the reservoir before installing and removing the sensor. Also, ensure you do regular maintenance as deposits within the diaphragm can give false results.

Ultrasonic Level Sensor

This is a level sensor that you install above the liquid. It doesn’t get into contact with the fluid. It emits ultrasonic pulses that hit the surface of the fluid and reflect the sensor. You calculate the liquid level by the time difference between when the signal is sent and received at the sensor. The sensor is easy to install and remove. Also, the processes can happen when there’s fluid in the tank.

Radar Level Sensor

A radar level sensor is among the contactless sensors; You install it above the liquid level. The radar sensor sends microwaves signals to the surface of the fluid. The fluid then reflects the signal.

As the fluid level drops, the travel time of the signal rises. It’s insensitive to all fluid parameters, and you can use it with all types of liquid. Also, the sensor gauges all types of fluids and solids in a tank. The only limiting factor is when the sensor is when the surface of the fluid is electrically conductive.

Radiometric Level Sensor

You install this contactless sensor outside the tank. It emits gamma rays that pass through the tank and the fluid. The strength of the rays weakens when it passes through the fluid. You can use it through any fluid of any characteristic. Also, it is perfect for fluids under extreme pressure and heat levels. However, the tech is expensive and limits the use of radiometric level sensors.

Capacitive Level Sensor

These sensors use electric capacitors to detect the fluid level. They are a great replacement for radar and ultrasonic sensors when you are working with electrically conductive fluids. Also, you can use them with powder and granular products.

Sensor Head Design

Every sensor type has a sensor head. The design should fit well in your application. If you go for a submissible design, ensure the lowest fluid level mark is above the sensor. It ensures that the sensor does not miss its intended use.

Contactless sensors also have different sensor head designs. Each should have the strength to send signals to the surface of the fluid or through the fluid. It should also have a wide area to receive the return signals.

The Goal Of Water Level Sensing

There are different reasons each firm has a water float sensor. The main reason is to know when the fluid levels drop and when you need to pump in more fluids. Thus, the type of sensor matters due to its functions.

In most cases, the water level sensing doesn’t need a power supply. Thus, it’s energy saving. You can use the sensor to prevent water from overflowing. The practical example is in the toilets. When the water in the cistern rises, it pushes the float upwards, closing the water inlet. When you flush, the float drops, opening the inlet. It is a similar function in water reservoirs. When the fluid level rises, the sensor sends a signal to initiate action. Thus, you can select a sensor that best suits the action needed.

Tank Operating Environment

The fluid determines the environment the sensor will work in. If the fluid is safe for human skin, then it has minimal damage to the sensor. But when humans need protection from the fluid, the sensor has increased chances of breaking down.

If you have corrosive and hazardous fluids, you should select a contactless sensor. Also, you should check if the fluid is electrically conductive. If you pick an unsuitable sensor, it will fail and give the wrong readings.

Installation of Water Level Sensors

Many water level sensors come with an installation guide. The steps are easy to follow. If the sensor needs a power supply, you should start with the electrical connection. You can do that with basic knowledge of electronics. If you have a phobia of electricity, you can seek the services of an electrician. Follow the guide keenly not to miss the point. Then install the sensor on the level advised by the manufacturer.

Maintenance of Water Level Sensors

You should have regular maintenance for all water level sensors. Contact sensors have higher chances of failing. Thus regular checking ensures they are working well. Also, you get rid of any deposit on the sensor head and the diaphragm.

Ensure that the electronic areas are dry. Any moisture can ruin your sensor. Also, ensure the contactless sensors are dust-free.

The Water flow sensors save you the agony of running out of water without notice. Also, firms need fluid level sensors to avoid running into losses. Thus, you should ensure they do not fail at any point.
