Do I Need Wudu To Learn Quran Online On My Phone?

Most people often wonder whether they need to perform wudu to recite Quran online on their mobile phone. Nowadays, before an honest answer could come up, a pool of fatwa goes viral, thereby deceiving sincere Muslims. However, before believing any new updates about Islam, it is wise to ask the Mufti or someone capable of providing you with the correct answer.

Reciting Quran Online – Do you need Wudu?

 A genuine answer to whether you need wudu for reading Quran online is, No.

You don’t need to perform wudu for reciting Quran on your phone or tab. You can recite it at any time and place. Nevertheless, there is a difference of opinion about this issue among Muslim scholars.

 Some scholars say it is necessary to make wudhu because the digital Quran is in the form of an image. Therefore, they argue that one needs to make wudhu if one wants to read or learn Quran online as per the rules. They believe it is compulsory to perform wudhu before touching a physical copy of the Quran, i.e. Mushaf.

On the other hand, some scholars say that making wudhu is unnecessary because the digital Quran is not a physical copy of the Quran.

Can You touch the Quran without wudu?

There’s an ongoing debate on whether you can touch the Quran without wudu; however, to conclude the question, it is better not to touch the Quran without wudhu.

However, according to a Hadith, ‘No one should touch the Quran but pure’. 

Allah (SWT) loves those who stay pure and clean. Likewise, when reciting the Holy Book sent by Allah (SWT), it is best to begin by purifying themselves to concentrate on the recitation better.  

It is a Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to perform wudhu before reciting the Quran. 

Similarly, if you want to be on the safer side, you can make wudhu before reciting Quran online. Moreover, it will also help you to concentrate more on your recitation.

In short, there is no hard and fast rule about whether you need to perform wudhu for reading Quran online or not. However, if you want to be on the safe side, it is always better to make wudhu before reciting Quran.

When do you need wudu to memorize Quran?

 You must make wudu when you want to recite the Quran you have memorized.

 Wudhu is necessary when you want to touch or recite a physical copy of the Quran, i.e. Mushaf. However, if you are reciting from your phone or tab, you don’t need to perform wudhu. 

Can You recite Quran online in the state of Junub? 

If you want to recite Quran online, you can do so even if you are in the state of Junub.

However, if you want to touch or recite from a physical copy of the Quran, i.e. Mushaf, then you will need to perform wudhu first.

 Can You offer Salah with wudhu from Quran recited on the phone?

 No, you cannot. 

The reason is that when you make wudhu for Salah, the water does not just clean your body but also cleans the place where you will be offering Salah. So, if you want to offer Salah with wudhu from Quran recited on the phone, then the phone will also have to be in the state of wudhu.

Does reading Quran from an app requires Wudu?

No, it does not. You don’t need to perform wudu to read Quran from an app on your phone or tab. You can recite it at any time and place. Nevertheless, there is a difference of opinion about this issue among Muslim scholars.

What if the wudu breaks while reciting Quran online?

If your wudu breaks while you are reciting Quran online, you may or may not perform wudu to continue reading. However, if you can concentrate and keep up the reading like before, it is best to continue reciting.

Restriction Of Using The Online Quran Texts In Real Life

Although you can recite the digital Quran by doing Wudu, there is a restriction to it that you must strictly abide by.

 Reciting Quran online in the washroom: It is not permissible to recite the Quran on your phone or any other digital device in the bathroom. Besides, you should avoid listening to the audio version of the Quran while in the restroom. 

A valid reason is that washrooms or restrooms are impure places where we urinate and release faces. Also, there’s a chance that the Holy Book may trample or toss over on the floor. 

Moreover, the Quran is a respectful Book of Islam that should be recited with utmost sanctity. Therefore, one must recite it in a clean and peaceful place.

When We Need Wudu To Recite the Quran?

We need to perform Wudu the right way when: 

1- We want to touch the physical copy of the Quran (Mushaf)

2- recite the Quran in congregational prayers

3- Leading the congregational prayers

4- When giving a sermon

5- After the state of Junub (sexual impurity)

6- After the menstruating cycle ends

7- When a woman is Nifas (post-delivery bleeding)

8- Whenever we want to enter the holy mosque of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), i.e. Masjid-e-Nabawi in Madina

9- When performing Hajj or Umrah

How To Perform Wudu The Right Way?

The following steps must adhere to while performing Wudu:

1- Make sure to use clean water that anyone else has not used before. This water can be from the tap, well, rainwater, etc.

2- Start by washing your hands thrice and rinsing your mouth. 

3- Use your wet hands to clean your nose by sniffing water and blowing it out. Do this process three times. 

4- Next, wash your face thrice from the hairline to the chin and from one earlobe to the other. 

5- It is now time to wash your arms, and you must start from the fingertips and work your way up to the elbows. 

6- Wipe your entire head with wet hands, starting from the front of the forehead to the back of the neck. Then, slide the back side of your hands, excluding the index fingers and thumb from the next back till below the ears. 

7- Use water to clean your ears by inserting your wet little finger inside them and then moving it in a circular motion. 

8- The last step is to wash your feet three times. Start from the toes and work your way up to the ankles.

It is important to note that Wudu is nullified as soon as you pass wind or release any impurity from your body. In such a case, you will need to perform Wudhu repeatedly.

Final Thoughts

Although you can recite the Quran online from your phone without Wudhu, there are certain situations where it is necessary to perform ablution.

Wudu cleans not only your body but also the place where you will be offering Salah or reciting the Quran. So, if you want to provide Salah with wudhu from Quran recited on the phone, then the phone will also have to be in the state of wudhu.

Moreover, there is a restriction to reciting Quran online that you must strictly abide by. For instance, it is not permissible to recite the Quran on your phone or any other digital device in the washroom. Besides, you should avoid listening to the audio version of the Quran while in the restroom.
