How to Fix “This Device is Currently in Use” Error?

At times, when trying to eject a USB drive, you may get the “this device is currently in use” error. When you get this error, you should close all the tabs, and ensure you are not using the flash drive. If this does not work, then apply the fixes mentioned below.

 

Using This PC to Eject the Drive

You should pursue the guidelines provided below:

  1. Go to the shortcut icon of This PC and select the Libraries option through the left pane.
  2. Then select the removable drive you would like to format, and right-click on it, then choose the option of Eject.
  3. Now, select the Continue button, and you will see a pop-up message that says “safe to remove” on the taskbar.

Using Event Viewer to Know Which Procedure is Problematic

You should pursue the guidelines provided below:

  1. Go to the Windows Search section.
  2. Then type ‘control panel’ into it and select the OK button to open the screen of Control Panel.
  3. Select the option of ‘View by’ and choose ‘Large Icons’ option.
  4. Move down until you reach the entry of Administrative Tools.
  5. Find the shortcut of the Event Viewer at the upper side of the screen.
  6. Reach the left pane and select the section of ‘Applications and Services Logs’ then right-click on it.
  7. Then go to View and select the ‘Show Analytic and Debug Logs’ option.
  8. After that, select the ‘Windows Logs’ option and choose the ‘System’ option.
  9. You can view different events lists and check the one form ‘Kernel-PnP.’
  10. Then write down the exact number instead of the name of the placeholder.
  11. Hit the ‘Ctrl + Shift + Esc’ buttons simultaneously on the keyboard to launch the Task Manager.
  12. Select the ‘More details’ option at the lower side of the screen to sort to expand the Task Manager.
  13. Mark the box beside the entry of PDI.
  14. Select the Yes button.

Format the Drive as exFAT (USB Drives)

You should pursue the guidelines provided below:

  1. Go to the This PC icon and click on to open it.
  2. Then choose the Libraries option.
  3. Select the USB removable drive you would like to format, then pick the option of Format.
  4. You will see a prompt screen that says Format. Do not forget to click on the menu beneath the File System and choose the exFAT file system, if it is not already chosen.
  5. Now, click on the Format button.

Once your device is formatted, simply try to eject the USB drive once again.
