The Town of Mystic offers six parks: Birch Hill Park, Clark Hill Park, Indian Mounds Park, Mill Pond Regional Park, Pottsgrove Park, and Stafford Lake Regional Park. All of these parks have trails for hiking as well as playgrounds for the kiddos. The trails are wheelchair accessible and many also offer picnic areas with grills.
Birch Hill Park has a large pond with a fishing area as well as multiple trails including one that leads to the summit of Mt. Hope which provides excellent views of surrounding Connecticut towns and villages. Clark Hill Park features wetlands area with several species of birds including wood ducks and American coots as well as a paved biking/running trail that goes around the entire park.
Indian Mounds Park is home to two historic structures: the Fort Mystic Fire Tower built in 1827 by Major John Brooks Jr., son-in-law of Colonel Jonathan Trumbull, governor of Connecticut; and the reconstructed 1796 Block House which served as both a military post and trading post in southeastern Connecticut during the 18th century. Visit Mystic Aquarium
The Mystic Aquarium is a 5.5 acre aquatic park that was founded in 1996. It features more than 1,000 species of fish and invertebrates from all over the world, and also has an aviary with more than 100 birds. There are also two large pools, the Mystic River and the Salmon Pool, as well as a small wading pool for kids. The aquarium has an 8-foot-deep dive well that allows visitors to explore the aquatic life up close. The admission fee is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and free for children under age 3.
Explore the Historical districts of Mystic
There are many historical districts in Mystic which are worth exploring. These include the Pequot Triangle, where you can find historic homes and churches; the Seaport District, which has a broad range of maritime-themed businesses; and the Downtown Historic District, which is home to centuries-old brick buildings and courthouse. If you want to take the whole family on a memorable trip, we recommend starting out at the Mystic Community Boating Center (MCBC). Here you can rent boats by the hour or day, or buy a package deal that includes equipment. If you want to explore more of the river on your own, CBC provides maps and directions for various paddling routes.
One way to get an up-close view of the salmon is to kayak. Kayaks are easy to transport and allow for plenty of exploration on your own or with friends. And if you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking a SUP rafting journey down the river. Ramps in designated areas make it easy to climb aboard; simply tie your boat onto one of them when you reach your destination!
No matter how you choose to experience Mystic’s Salmon River, be sure to bring sunscreen and wear sun protection – both during the day and at night when renting boats. And don’t forget your camera – this is definitely one adventure not to miss!
Spend time at The Children’s Museum of New England in Fall River
The Children’s Museum of New England is a great place for kids of all ages. The museum has a wide variety of exhibits, from art to science and history, and it’s always changing so there’s always something new to explore. The museum is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and closed on Sundays. Admission is free for members and children under 2 years old, and admission is $7 for adults and seniors.
