Our tips reveal what you need to look out for when planning, selecting and buying a garage door in order to find the right door for you.
Choose the right garage door with our 12 tips
Choosing the right door is often more difficult than initially thought. Because garage doors differ not only in their appearance, but also in their material-like properties, their structure and their functionality.
With our 12 tips below, you are optimally prepared to select a garage door alliance ohio – regardless of whether you are looking for a door for a new garage (door purchase) or an existing garage (garage door exchange).
1. How many “wings” should your garage door have?
Garage doors typically have one door leaf or two door leaves. A door with two door leaves is a very popular variant, which is also called a double leaf door. You can open its gates either individually or with both “wings”. Plan enough space, because the pivoting range of the door varies depending on the leaf width. If there is not enough space after the garage door has been installed, your swing gate can quickly become a problem.
2. Do you need a pass door?
How do you want to use your garage? As a place to park your car or as a multi-purpose garage? Having to keep opening and closing the door of a garage, which is used as a workshop or storage room, for example, can quickly become a nuisance. In this case, you should think about an integrated door, a so-called wicket door.
Such a wicket door is embedded in the door leaf. Their use protects the movement mechanisms of the garage door leaf, so that damage due to wear and tear is reduced. But the big advantage of a wicket door is this: Even in the event of a power failure of an electrically controlled locking mechanism (see tip 4), the wicket door remains accessible. A distinction is made between wicket doors with and without a threshold.
3. How do you want to open and close the garage door?
Depending on the mechanism with which you open and close the garage door, garage doors are divided. So there is:
- up-and-over gates or tilting gates,
- sectional doors (in the variants: side sectional door and overhead sectional door),
- roller doors,
- sliding gates,
- and swing gates.
Classic swing gates (see point 1) with two leaves (one active leaf and one adjustable leaf) can hardly be found in modern garages. If they are used, they are usually made to measure by a carpenter. When buying a garage door today, you usually have the choice between up-and-over doors, which are certainly also widespread because of their good price-performance ratio, roller doors, sliding doors and sectional doors.
A swing gate opens upwards. It is robust because it is made from one complete piece. A roller door, on the other hand, works like a roller shutter: It disappears rolled up in the upper door area. Sliding gates move parallel to the garage wall, you not only need thrust for this (manual or electrical source, see point 4), but also appropriate storage space to the left or right of the garage opening. The sectional door can also be opened upwards. It fits into any garage opening, whether it’s square or slanted. Even garage doors with round arches can be realized with sectional doors.
4. Should your garage door be opened with muscle power or with an electric motor?
While some garage doors are opened and closed by hand, this task is performed automatically on other models. It draws its energy from an electric motor. Please note: The automatic system uses electricity to drive your garage door, which can increase your household’s operating costs.
The big advantage of an electric opening and closing method is that it is easier and quicker to use. But the electric drive also scores in terms of security (see tip 8): An automatically locked garage door cannot be opened by hand, and it blocks when you try.
5. Do you want to be able to control the garage door remotely?
A hand-held transmitter is a practical thing: it saves you the hassle of getting out of the car, because thanks to special radio technology, a push of a button is all it takes to open or close the door as if by magic. This keeps you dry when it rains and even if you don’t have a passenger to help you open the garage door, a radio-controlled hand-held transmitter will prove its worth.
Good to know: The practical hand-held transmitter is either part of the basic equipment of a new garage door or can be bought as an optional accessory, so that you can also upgrade an existing garage door with it afterwards. You have to make sure that the hand-held transmitter fits the door or its door drive system.
6. Do you want the garage door to open automatically when you approach it?
In addition to a manually operated remote release, a light barrier system is another option for opening and closing the garage door. With a light barrier system, the door opens as soon as you enter or drive into the area of the light barrier. This is particularly advantageous if you don’t have a free hand to open the gate. This system also offers benefits for people with disabilities, as the garage door opens and closes completely automatically.
7. Should the house and garage have a uniform look?
How the garage door fits into the environment plays an important role in the overall impression of your property: the closer the garage is to the house, the more noticeable the visual differences. A design similar to that of the house conveys a calm impression, while a conspicuous garage door makes for a rather restless sight.
Several factors are decisive for the appearance of the door, including material, color and surface. The design and style also determine the appearance of a garage door. So it is best to think about how you want to design your garage beforehand.
8. What material should the garage doors be made of?
Common materials for modern garage doors are
- Stainless steel,
- and aluminum.
Solid wood is a high-quality material for doors, which, in addition to its natural look, provides natural thermal insulation. But: solid wood like mahogany, red cedar and Merbau is heavy. We, therefore, recommend planning for a sufficiently powerful electric drive (see tip 4). When buying wooden garage doors, you must also remember that wood is a natural product that changes over time and under the influence of light, temperature and humidity. Depending on the type of wood, cracks or color changes occur, which have a greater or lesser effect on the quality of the garage door. Because wood “works”, a solid wood garage door needs a protective coat of paint that needs to be renewed regularly.
Garage doors made of stainless steel and aluminum must also be protected from wind and weather. There are many paints for metal gates, sometimes a paint requires a primer. Aluminum doors also need a primer.
9. How should the garage door be secured?
Burglars often see your garage as an easier target than your house. Not without reason: many garages are locked less securely than residential buildings. Nevertheless, other vehicles are often parked there in addition to the car, for example motorcycles and bicycles. The apparent security of a garage often tempts its owners not to park their vehicles safely.
But it’s not just about vehicles: Tools and household and gardening equipment are also often stored in the garage. So rely on a garage door that offers resistance to burglary attempts and a burglar-resistant security system.
Modern garage doors come with locking devices from the factory that meet the high-security requirements. To ensure that they work safely, it is advisable to have the new door and security technology installed by an experienced specialist. This also works afterward. The police also recommend so-called bar locks for retrofitting garage doors and doors.
Side entrances to the garage should also be included in the security concept. Especially when there is a connection between the garage and the house.
Important to know: The same protection classes (so-called burglary resistance classes) apply to garage doors as to windows. Protection class RC2 is recommended for doors, and a higher one in particularly dangerous situations.
10. Should your garage doors be monitored?
If you already monitor your property with an alarm system, you should definitely include the new garage door in the monitoring concept. Anyone who does not yet have an alarm system and is reluctant to invest in one can fake an alarm on the door.
11. Does the garage door have pinch protection?
While it’s the exception rather than the rule, there are times when someone gets injured by a garage door. With sectional doors, for example, fingers can get caught in the gaps between the individual door sections. doors have been subject to the European standard EN 13241-1 since 2005. This sets safety standards, including
- a finger protection,
- a side entry protection,
- a fall protection,
- and a shut-off mechanism in case the gate encounters obstacles while opening or closing,
to protect garage owners and especially their children. So when you buy a garage door chester oh, make sure that your dream door meets the standard.
12. Should the garage doors be thermally insulated?
A garage that is attached directly to the house should be considered in the energy concept for the building. It is part of the building shell, so to speak – and it is subject to the provisions of the current Energy Saving Ordinance. The optimal insulation of the garage and garage door is particularly important. If there is no insulation, expensive heat is wasted through your garage and your door. Inadequate insulation also often has undesirable thermal bridges that lead to uncontrollable energy losses. In an optimally insulated garage, it is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than outside. This also increases the utility value of the garage, for example as a workshop or studio.
We hope our 12 tips for buying a garage door were able to help you with the preparation and your purchase decision. How about, for example, a wooden garage including a carport? Or are you still not able to decide between a wooden garage and a carport? Do you need information about building permits for carports or would you like to browse through the wooden garages in the online shop?
