Tips To Ensure You Are Prepared For Your IELTS Exam

Tips for IELTS Speaking Test

Before we get started, this is the basic information you need to know.

The test is designed to assess your ability to speak and communicate in English.

While the reading, listening, and writing sections of the test are conducted in one session, the conversational test is conducted separately. In this test you will communicate in person with the examiner. The test can be performed at any time within a week before or after the main test. This is the case for both online and offline IELTS test.

The test usually takes about 11 to 14 minutes – neither shorter nor longer.

The test is recorded, which means that you can request a re-assessment if necessary.

Do you know What Score you Get for IELTS Speaking Test?

You will be assessed according to the following principles. Each of them has about 25% of your points.

  1. Fluency and solidarity – how much you can use language to express your thoughts and ideas in an organized way
  2. Grammar – the correct grammatical use of language, especially sentence structure and tense
  3. Dictionary – use a wide range of words to explain your ideas
  4. Pronunciation – using the correct pronunciation of words (or British / American)

You Need to know the System of the IELTS Test

When you enter the test room, the introductory session begins. Here the examiner greets you and asks you a few questions to confirm your identity. You will also be asked to display your passport.

After that, the main part of the test begins. It is divided into 3 segments.

  • Question & Answer Parts Session Time — 4-5 minutes
  • Talk on the topic – 1-2 minutes, with 1 minute of wholesale questions
  • Discussion – 4-5 minutes

We will deal with each of these sections in our next few posts.

But first, here are some of our general tips that can help you get started on the right foot!

General Tips and Tricks

How should the introductory session be conducted?

Although your first communication with the examiner will not be part of the official score, it is an opportunity to get a good first impression! The examiner greets you, introduces him, and asks for your name and where you live, and you should speak accordingly.

Some Important Tips for Speaking Part

Here are some Important Tips:

  • Meet the assessor with a smile and “Good morning”.
  • Make sure you say your name and place of birth exactly as written on your passport / identity card.
  • Be clear about your name.
  • Do not provide additional information about your hometown – just the name of the city and the maximum name of the state will suffice.

Speech Testing in an Informal Setting

Keep in mind that all of these sessions are convenient to test your ability to communicate in English. You don’t have to act or speak formally, as you do in a college interview. Just listen to what the examiner has to say and answer clearly.

Language Testing, Not Knowledge

In this test, the ability to use language is more important than your knowledge of different topics. The examiner will give you higher scores if you can speak at length without even providing evidence; and gives you lower scores if you only say one or two sentences, even if those sentences have interesting arguments.

Here are some Helpful Tips:

  • Connect the topic / question with your personal experience – when you do, you can talk longer.
  • Don’t spend too much time thinking about facts related to the topic – even if you don’t know anything about the topic, you can be honest about it and then talk about something related, e.g. If an examiner asks you a question about “your dog’s pet,” you can say, “I don’t have any pet dog, but I love animals, especially dogs. I have a friend who has a Labrador puppy and I love him. Like he is my personal animal. “
  • Try to be faithful to the topic – while speaking you are allowed to connect other ideas, try to stick to the broad topic that the examiner is giving you. This is important for maintaining harmony, i.e. what you say should make sense.
  • Refrain from lying – while you will not lose points if you lie (the examiner does not care), it is harder to try when you lie. Stay on top of what you really know.

Create a Good Dictionary Resource

Creating a good dictionary requires experience – you should read as much as possible and speak English. Keeping a journal of words and always keeping a dictionary close to the dictionary are a few things you can do. If you do this, your vocabulary will improve slowly and steadily.

But it is important to use words that you actually know when taking the IELTS Speaking test. Using simple words correctly is better than using complex words incorrectly!

Pronunciation is Important – But Accent isn’t!

You will receive points for your ability to pronounce words correctly. You should speak using standardized English or American English pronunciation. The best way to improve your pronunciation is to listen to English as much as possible in movies, news channels, etc., as well as practice your speaking in English.

However, you should not speak in a fake dialect. When taking your IELTS Speaking test, do not try to imitate a British or American dialect. Simply put, always pay attention to maintaining clarity.

Practice Speaking

We’ve said this twice, but we’ll say it again – you need to speak English regularly!

Try to talk to teachers, trainers or friends who are fluent in English. Talk about different topics to gain confidence in the language. The more you use the language, the more natural you will sound during the IELTS Speaking test.

Be Calm and Confident

Finally, you need to be completely calm and confident on the day of the test. Be friendly and open with the examiner. Don’t think of it as a “terrible test” – see it as an opportunity to have an interesting conversation with someone, to discuss your thoughts. Be yourself and try to enjoy yourself. The quieter you are, the less conscious you will be – and in the end, you will sound just as natural!
