How to fix a roof with gutters

The roof is literally found on the kind of maintenance list for any homeowner and is subject to a lot of wear and tear. Fortunately, it is possible to fix minor problems without the help of a professional. After finding out the source of the leak, replace the damaged tiles, repair the torn asphalt blanket and seal the gaps in the joints. Many of these repairs are relatively simple, but if the damage is greater, there are signs of structural problems, or the roof is more than 20 years old, it is best to contact a specialist.

Repair asphalt shingles

Inspect the roof over watermarks on the roof for damage. If you haven’t found the source of the leak yet, track down the water damage inside the home. If the building has an attic, go to the site with a flashlight and look for spots of water or mold. Watch the location of all the signs you find and check the corresponding location outside the home.

If the roof is sloping, check the locations higher than where you have found evidence of leaks inside the house. Water enters from somewhere, and due to gravity, it penetrates into the attic to a point lower than the slope of the roof.

If you can’t find the point of the leak, attach the hose and run it for 1-2 minutes over different parts of the ceiling. Have someone inside the house alert you when you see water.

Inspect the roof for severe damage.

Look for bent, cracked, or missing tiles at the leak site and analyze the overall condition of the roof. Check if there are many missing or fallen tiles if there are gaps where the roofing material meets the vents or chimney and if there are other signs of more extensive damage.

It is relatively easy to replace a piece or two of tiles and re-close the small holes. But larger areas with tile falling off and widespread wear are signs that the roof needs to be replaced, especially if it’s more than 20 years old.
Additionally, if you find a lot of mold or mildew in the wooden support ceiling inside the attic, there may be structural problems that need professional help.

Flatten and install the curved tiles again.

Over time, the corners of the asphalt shingles begin to bend. Layout the curved tiles carefully and use a caulking gun to apply some sealant under the raised corners. Press the tiles against the sealant and use a trowel to cover the edges of the tiles with roofing cement.

Brick tiles are malleable at high temperatures. When they become brittle in the cold, you may need to use a hairdryer to smooth the curved tiles. Do not use a torch or other heat source stronger than the dryer to avoid damaging the tiles.

Repair crack clean using roof sealant.

It is not necessary to replace this tile with a clean crack. Alternatively, use a caulking gun to apply a thick line of sealant under the crack. Press the tile against the sealant and apply another line of the same product to the crack. Use a spoon to spread the applied sealant to both edges of the crack.

To mask the repair, look around the roof and over the gutter to see if there are asphalt grains accumulating. Take a small amount of it and throw it on top of the sealant to make the color of the product match the tiles.

Change broken or missing tiles.

If all or part of a tile is missing, go to a building supply store and find a matching replacement tile. To remove broken tiles, carefully lift the corners of the tiles with the crowbar. Use a hammer to pull the nails from the four corners of the tiles, then remove them and scrape the area underneath to remove the rest of the ceiling cement.

If necessary, use a hairdryer to make the surrounding tiles more pliable. After removing the old tiles, use a sharpened pen to circle the back corners of the new tiles, making installation easier.

Install the new tile in place, carefully lift the tile over it and pass 3 cm galvanized roofing nails into the corners of the new tile. If you removed any of the screws that held the tile over the one that was broken, replace them.
To finish, use a trowel to apply ceiling cement over the nail heads and edges of new tiles

Look for cracks or bubbles in the ceiling material.

Just as you would with a tile roof repair, look for damage on the outside that corresponds to water spots on the roof. Look closely to see if there are any small cracks around the joints, vents, chimneys, and other things going through the roof. One of the clearest signs of a leak is the presence of open cracks in the material and bubbles at the points where air and water collect.

To repair a small hole in a joint, hatch, or chimney, use roofing sealant. Any opening longer than 5 mm, crack opening and the area with bubbles will need patching.

As with tile repair, repairing minor damage to an asphalt blanket is relatively easy. But if you notice widespread wear, water spots, mold, or rot on your ceiling or ceiling, contact a professional.

Cut bubbles to release air and water.

Remove all grit from the damaged site and carefully use a pen to cut out the middle of the bubble. Cut the bubble only on the top layer of the ceiling, without cutting the substrate or wood fiberboard under the blanket.

If the bubble contains water, use a dry cloth to absorb the liquid. After all the water has been absorbed, let the place dry for 12 to 24 hours. If you are in a hurry, dry everything with a hairdryer, but make sure the area is completely dry before proceeding with the repair.

It is common for a leak in an asphalt blanket to cause bubbles. If there are no bubbles when you leak, skip this step and read on to learn how to fix it rip.
